The story of Millwood Manor

  • Home of Edward Wadham, mineral agent to the Duke of Buccleuch from circa 1856.
  • Edward Wadham was Mayor of Barrow (1878–1881).
  • Became a home for the elderly circa 1947; disused at the time of the survey.
  • Archives and illustrations provide insights:
    • Buccleuch archives detail alterations and rebuilding of "the villa at Millwood" around 1860, coinciding with Wadham's marriage.
    • An older house once occupied the site of the 1876 addition.
    • Plans for the 1876 work survive in Buccleuch archives.

Built by Edward Browning of Stamford in 1860 and later altered and extended by Paley and Austin in 1876, the manor was constructed for Edward Wadham, mineral agent to the Duke of Buccleuch and later mayor of Barrow between 1878 and 1881. "Buccleauch archives contain papers relating to the alteration and building of the 'villa at Millwood' in 1860, the year of Wadham's marriage."
